K&A - Power, Air, Space and Environmental Requirements
This article outlines the site and laboratory requirements for installing and operating K&A / H-Series oligonucleotide synthesizers. Proper preparation ensures stable performance, reliable reagent flow, and a smooth installation.
1. Electrical Power Requirements
Standard Power
Voltage:
- 115 VAC, 50/60 Hz (North America)
- 220–230 VAC, 50/60 Hz (International)
- Outlet: Standard grounded outlet
- Dedicated Circuit: Strongly recommended
Typical Load
- Low overall power consumption
- Peak draw typically <5 A at 115 V
- No three-phase power required
Best Practices
- Use a surge protector
- Avoid shared circuits with ovens, centrifuges, or freezers
2. Compressed Air Requirements
K&A / H-Series systems rely on compressed air for valve actuation. A compressor is supplied with the instrument. A High pressure source can be substituted for the compressor as long as it can supply a consistent pressure at a range of 60-100psi
Compressed Air or High Pressure source
- Operating Pressure:
- 0.4–0.5 MPa (60–75 psi)
- Air Quality:
- Clean, dry, oil-free air
- Recommended filtration: ≤5 µm
- Flow Demand:
- Low continuous flow
- Suitable for small laboratory compressors
Compressor Guidance
- Quiet, lab-rated compressors are recommended
- Regular draining and maintenance are required to prevent moisture issues
Gas Requirements
Argon or Nitrogen
- Grade 5 purity or higher
- Used for bottle pressurization
- Typical Input Pressure:25-30PSI
- Standard lab argon cylinder with dual-stage regulator. Drop down 1-stage regulator can be used if using in-house pressure system is used
3. Space & Benchtop Requirements
Bench Space
-
Minimum Width: ~36 in (90 cm)
-
Recommended Width: 48–60 in (120–150 cm)
-
Depth: ≥30 in (75 cm)
-
Vertical Clearance: ≥30 in (75 cm)
Bench Requirements
- Rigid, level, vibration-free surface
- Chemical-resistant benchtop preferred
Clearance
- Front or side access for:
- Column loading
- Bottle changes
- Routine service
4. Environmental Conditions
- Temperature: 18–25 °C (64–77 °F)
- Humidity: <80% RH, non-condensing
- Ventilation:
- Standard lab ventilation required
- Local exhaust or hood recommended for volatile reagents
- Vibration: Avoid proximity to shakers or centrifuges
